‘Literacy and Numeracy for Learning and Life: The National Strategy to Improve Literacy and Numeracy Among Children and Young People’ was published by the Department of Education in 2011. It identifies six areas for action to improve standards in literacy and numeracy.
The work of the Preparing for Life programme, in providing professional development for teachers in the Write to Read model, is well aligned with a number of the priority actions in this plan including:
- Providing access to high quality professional development courses for teachers on the teaching of literacy and numeracy.
- Improving the use of assessment information to support better teaching and learning in literacy for individual students.
- Providing guidance to teachers on how best literacy and numeracy may be developed across all subject areas and areas of learning in the primary curriculum.
- Increasing the amount of time spent on the teaching of literacy and numeracy in primary schools.
